Never ceasing love, mercy, and faithfulness

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord if my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him." The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.

Lamentations 3:22-25

---

One of my most favorite songs to sing as a young child was "As we gather", which included the words of this passage. Because of this, these words are forever embedded in my memory and comes to mind periodically, even while I don't always remember where in scripture this exactly came from.

Nonetheless, how true and how comforting are these words. In the midst of great sorrow, turmoil, and pain, the speaker in Lamentations 3 is able to express hope in the Lord. Although it was God who brought about the destruction, and "yoke in his youth," the writer remembers that is is also the Lord who is faithful to us till the end. God is a God of righteous anger and judgment, but He is also forever faithful to those who repent and seek His face. As the ESV study bible notes, "God’s covenantal fidelity and personal integrity remain intact no matter what happens."

I long to see my soul lifted up each new day/morning with this reminder and truth. That despite what the previous day has brought; despite what sins I may have committed; God's mercies are new every morning because He is faithful.

Lord, may this truth and hope be every present in my life. That you are faithful to do good in my life. To cover me with your love and mercy every morning. Thank you for your faithfulness despite my faithlessness. God, carry us to be reminded of this truth every moment.

In Jesus name, Amen.
