sokin's devotional 22 - redeem your words
"set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips."
psalm 141:3
"therefore, encourage each other with these words."
1 thessalonians 4:18
"she had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said."
luke 10:39
---
Use your words to bless, encourage. Not to kill, destroy, and put down.
'Speak once, listen twice' - is the old adage. But this wisdom shouldn't just stop with those instructions. The follower should also take notice as to what is actually being said.
I remember having quite a potty mouth developing in college. I wasn't always one to curse, but the freedom of college I guess let my tongue out a bit.
But I couldn't help but notice moments in my life when I had to do a double take and wonder, "man...did I REALLY have to say it like that??"
Each breath we breathe has been ordained by God. Think about that. Every breath you are breathing at the very moment has been given to you as a blessing by God.
Why waste that precious breath in breathing insults, heaping lies, and spreading gossip about others?
As Paul writes to the Thessalonian church, we should use our words to encourage one another.
What do we encourage others with?
With the joy of knowing and savoring Christ as King! As Paul wrote of earlier in the same chapter, we should bless one another with the fact that our lives on earth are but a whisper of whats to come! That there is an eternity waiting for those who place their faith in Jesus Christ.
Bless each other with words that point to an awesome Savior and hope in an everlasting life.
And at the same time, also remember the old adage, "silence is golden."
Sometimes, not speaking, speaks volumes.
Some of us need to redeem our words, while some of us, needs to (in real talk) shut up.
We have to learn how to be silent at times and let God speak to us. We just need to listen.
He has a lot to say. So do you. But be like Mary, and dont just hear. Listen.
