sokin's devotional 14

"'Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. one owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more? Simon replied, 'I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.' 'You have judged correctly,' Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven - for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.'
....Jesus said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Luke 7:41-48, 50

I would argue that some people might read this passage and might instantly think, "i wonder if i am the man that owes 50 denarii, or the one that owes 500 denarii."

or maybe even, "If I were someone as sinful as a prostitute, I think I would react the same way if Jesus walked into the room."

But I think Jesus is pointing to something more profound here. Aside from the fact that even 50 denarii is a large sum of money, we are in fact not the man that owes 50 denarii, and maybe not even the man that owes 500 denarii. If we were to monetize our sin before God, we would probably owe a gajillion denarii. A googol denarri. An infinite denarii. We wont be able to count how fallen we are next to a Holy, Holy, Holy God.

We, in fact, have been forgiven much, but so few of us, really recognize it. Often times, our faith does not respond and react in the way this woman did at the feet of Jesus.

O believer. Realize how far from God you were and how much He still loved you, even when He had every right to hate you as His enemy. Jesus died so that he could pay the debt you could never afford. Let your faith respond to this love and come to the feet of Jesus and crown Him as your Lord and Savior.

It is this faith, that will ultimately save you and give you peace.
