discipline for sons

In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Hebrews 12:4-7, 11

---

Discipline is not easy. It is hardly (if ever) a delight. But a common theme in scripture is that discipline is, in fact, for our good. It reveals the fruit of righteousness.

Discipline in a way is like training. It isn't easy to train the body and mind toward Godly things, but once the work is put in, there is a benefit to it.

But even greater than this outcome is the fact that discipline is given out of love. God disciplines those he loves. So in a way, when I enter into a tough season where I am resisting against sin (which is the struggle of discipline the Hebrew writer refers to here), I have to remember:

1. God is allowing this season of discipline to happen. He is willingly letting me fight and struggle in this battle.

2. It is for my good and will yield good fruit in my life. There is nothing that God allows in my life that has no purpose. And specifically for discipline, he allows it for my good.

3. It isn't easy. Discipline, like I said above, is tough work. But again, it is for my good and for His glory.
