sokin's devotional 91 - oceans

"The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt...
Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!"
Psalm 93:1, 4

---

I had the privilege of going on a cruise last week to the Bahamas (yay staff life!).

Being the melancholy personality that I am, I regularly went out during the late evenings to step out onto the deck of the cruise ship. Not to be overly cliche but the view during sunset was in fact, "spectacular" and "breath-taking."

But more than being in awe of God's creation and majesty from the sunset, I had an even greater revelation from the Lord during the pitch black dark during the night out at sea.

When the only light illuminating the ocean around you is the dull dim of the moon, the ocean ceases to be just a provider of soothing sounds but instead becomes a black hole seemingly void of life.

You feel the power of the waves, the immenseness of its width, breadth, and depth, and you just feel so small and insignificant.

"I can die out here", is what I remember telling myself.

It was equal parts beautiful but also absolutely. completely. terrifying.

It was in that moment when I remembered the story of Peter stepping out onto the waters to approach Jesus. I used to think that he lacked faith (which Jesus rightly said) but from a brother to a brother - man, Peter had more faith than I do!

And don't even mention about how the ocean would be like in the midst of a huge storm. Even the calm ocean was scary to me. In a storm? Forget about it.

Which is exactly what the disciples experienced one night when they went out by ship and a storm came upon them. I would've been right next to the disciples rebuking Jesus for sleeping even though I had witnessed his miracles the day before.

The bible tells us in this psalm and elsewhere, that not only is God more powerful than the ocean waves (yes, even the waves in the midst of the tempest), but He's the Lord over it. He created it. He tells the waves how high it can go and how calm it can be.

So when you're out there in the ocean waters, being called to have faith, look less on your surroundings and look to the Maker of the waves. The controller of the seas. And we must not forget also that God is not merely a Poseidon-like figure, but He is the master of the entire universe.

I'm afraid of some ocean waters. I can't imagine what it would be like to stand next to the Sun.

And our God is bigger than all those things.
