sokin's devotional 40 - worthless idols

"No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, 'Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?' He feeds on ashes, a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say, 'Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?' Remember these things, O Jacob, for you are my servant, O Israel. I have made you, you are my servant; O Israel, I will not forget you. I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist.

Return to me, for I have redeemed you."
Isaiah 44:19-22

---

The passage points to the irony and ridiculousness of how some idols are made.

With the very same piece of wood, the craftsman also chooses to use it for fuel and prepare his meal and keep himself warm.

The same piece of wood, which holds no value or power in itself, is used for meal preparations and also for worship.

How ridiculous, we may think.

Or is it?

We can look at the idols and strongholds of our own lives and hearts. We may not worship a piece of wood, or stone, or whatever, but we all have idols which are silly not because of the material they are made of...

but because of the true God we are trading it for. We are, at times, pathetic creatures trading the banquet feast of the Almighty God for mud pies, as CS Lewis would say.

We forsake the call as an adopted son of the King, to be a beggar on the streets content with mere scraps.

Holy Spirit convicted me through this passage today. I have so many idols that I worship in my heart that is infinitely paler in comparison to God.

Yet, grace upon grace, our God calls us to Himself. He will not forget us (v. 21)

He calls out to us in the midst of us worshiping the many idols of our lives.

"Return to me, for I have redeemed you."
