sokin's devotional 84 - praying when weary
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Romans 8:26
---
Paul sets up this section by reminding us prior, that the law of the Spirit of life has set us free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1,2)
I love that he is honest with his struggles in Romans 7 and 8... Even the great apostle Paul faces the very dilemma that many of us face in our lifetime - we do the things we do not want to do, and we do not do the things we want to do. Our desires and our actions do not sync up and we wrestle with our sin nature that continues to burn in us. (Romans 7:15-19)
But he returns us to the Cross and to Jesus, and Jesus' atoning work on the cross for our sins. Jesus satisfies the wrath of God for our sin, and removes the guilt and shame as well. (Romans 7:24, 25)
Even still...with that said, we are still waging war against the members of our body and our flesh, straining to become more like Christ.
This takes effort..this takes work. To tear ourselves away from the flesh, and being renewed by the transforming of our minds.
Thankfully though, we have the Spirit of God.
The Spirit helps us in our weakness.
The Spirit intercedes for us.
The Spirit works in us when we are weak and lost and do not know what to pray for as we ought.
I need, we need, the Spirit of God. We must entrust ourselves to the Lord's work in our lives and set our minds on Jesus. Be restored in Him, covered by Him, run to Him.
When things are too weary and our prayers are weak and dull, trust that the Spirit is interceding for you. Place yourself under the grace of God again, trust in His ways above yours, and seek God even when the words do not come out.
